225, 000 jobs lost in public sector.

Crying yea thats what i thought originally. wanted to post this yesterday, but ran out of time. can you believe that figure? The headline from the times reads 225 000 public workers to be axed, and to be honest i still can't believe that. Its said that these cuts will go on till 2014, at least its gradual right? till you look at the figures its a shock.

For instance,  Universities are planning to cut are planning to cut more than 6,000 jobs in anticipation of a fall in public funding.

The police force has already been warned of cuts, and that some counties need to save as much as £14m pounds, and so 180 jobs are lost.

In the South East Coast NHS, this covers Surrey, Kent and Sussex, between £1.2 billion and £1.6 billion has to be saved by 2014.

A draft circulated to board members has said that 10% of staff, equivalent to 10,000 people, must go.

This is shocking. Like i said, its a good thing its gradual, and what scares me most is that these cuts have been planned quietly.

How many other companies do that? how many more jobs will be lost if this carries on as is? What do you think?

Is it fair to lose that many jobs?

Do you think its fair that so many people are losing their jobs? Or do you think that there could be other ways to save the money instead of making cutbacks.
    • There was no other way to save all that money (0%)
    • Its unfair and other means should be looked at before cutting all the jobs (100%)

This is the kind of thing the gov't want to keep out of the lime light at a time like this! It does not help thier pre-election image does it really?

When it comes to local authority workers (councils for example) then the cut backs are probably needed! I think that they duplicate a lot of workj in these places and never seem sure of who is doing what which is why people never get an answer and the job never gets done properly! I think it will give them the kick up the rear that they need to become more efficient and better run! (Provided they bother to act on it that is).

Its the cuts in healthcare, education and policing that I am worried about! Again with back office staff I am sure there is room for a few cut backs to create efficiency but this number of job losses will affect doctors, nurses and teachers directly and this is an area where there is already a short fall!

Also imagine that many more unemployed people coming onto the market?

precisely. thats what im thinking about. 225 thousand more people on unemployment grants.... the figures are staggering. with the 2 million odd already unemployed, how long will infrstructure support all of them with this number added to it....
