    Car scrappage move 'not generous'

Most motorists eligible for the Government's "bangers for cash" offer will refuse the new scheme because it is not generous enough, a survey suggests.

The scrappage scheme, to be introduced later this month, involves owners of 10-year-old cars getting £2,000 - half from the Government, half from the car industry - when they trade in their old vehicle and buy a brand-new model.

Similar schemes have proved a success in Europe, particularly in Germany where new car sales soared 40% in March.

But, according to new evidence from Parker's car buying guide, British motorists have been disappointed.

Its survey of 600 people found that 70% of respondents said the scheme was not generous enough, and overall 81% said they would not be taking advantage of it.

Kieren Puffet, editor of Parker's, said many motorists have managed to find much larger discounts under existing deals.

The bid was unveiled by the Government in the Budget to curb dwindling car sales.

It was announced this week that new car sales last month plunged to their lowest April level since 1991.

The 24% decline in sales was less than feared but still took the decrease in new registrations to 28.5% for the first four months of this year.

Just another 'gimmick' from this tired and inept goverment. It worked in Germany because they still make cars. Who would want a new car anyway? Its not like you can drive them anywhere without getting done for speeding.

I'm happy driving around in my piece of crap punto! Especially when you buy a new car you lose atleast a third of it original price once off the showcourt.

What bugs me is the fact that you will buy a new car for an outrageous price - you drive it for a some years and it suddenly halves in price when you try to sell it! You would be better off just getting a second hand car... in my view anyway.

Though I think some companies have benefitted from the scheme? Ford have received more than 3,000 orders and Honda with 900 since the scrappage scheme has been announced.
