This just about sums this Goverment up.....

Although I'm an occasional social smoker its nice to now go out and not come home smelling of smoke. But I am appaled at the UK goverments draconian approach to the no smoking rules. As I have been to many countrys who have no smoking laws but unlike the UK there is some flexibility ie choice of the owner of the business, separate smoking rooms or mainland Europe where they just ignore the law. In this country we would rarther see bars and clubs go out of business than show some flexibility. The Beluga Bar on the high street for example, a very successful business employing many people in the town will probably have its licence revoked next week due to the fact that the smokers of this very busy nightclub have to go outside to smoke and the residents on the high street have a problem with the noise. This is just one of many establishments that is suffering and I fear we will see many more pubs and clubs go to the wall this year. Anyway this is old news I hear you say but the reason I am ranting is that the leaders of the G7 confrence are meeting in London at the moment and they have designated smoking rooms! Yes smoking indoors while the rest of us have to huddle on street corners in the rainAngry

not true anymore dave!! they tried to keep the bar as a private members club but the law even extended to them eventually. the only place in the HoC you can smoke is on the veranda outside.

If it not the smoking ban it the increase in beer and wine prices that are slowly killing the pub and restuarant trade off.

I've worked in pubs for the past 9 years and have worked in plenty of smoke filled pubs and it was a welcomed relief when the smoking ban came in. This ban was brought in to protect both the staff working and the non smoking customers from passive smoke.I used to leave the pub with my eyes watering and stinking of stale smoke 5 days a week! atleast if you were smoking you had a choice to smoke inside or outside.

I do though feel sorry for the smokers as there seems to be a new law coming in every year trying to penalize anything that we enjoy doing.Smoking rooms would be a good idea, but this would only work in large venues such as clubs. Small local pubs would still suffer as most dont have the space or room to accommodate such a room.

I hate it when people start harping on about how the smoking ban was brought in to protect the health of the workers! I mean what a load of ***! When the law was passed there were jobs aplenty in all sort of fields. If you wanted to work in a bar then you worked in a bar smoke was just part of the job. If you didnt like a smokey atmosphere then you could go work somewhere else!!! i mean its not like its a vocation to work down the local boozer! get a bloody job in a factory packing  or driving a van!! everyone goes on like it was an infringement on workers rights to a healthy work environment but they forget that these workers chose the environment they were working in to start with!

I have managed bars in London for some years now - not some scuzzy 'local boozer' and had a massive team to run - i chose this career as it is i enjoy the social side of it. I sat and passed my licencing exams along with many other exams so please dont insinute that just because people work in bars that they are stupid and the only other forms of work available for such workers are lifting boxes in a factory ( if you can get me a job at the factory where you work - that would be great LOL ) or driving a poxy van.....

The ban is not just here to protect the workers its here to protect everyone ( i am a smoker by the way and have no problem standing outside ) but familys who come in for food don't want cigar smoke plumned over their children from someone sitting at the bar / another table.

In most every day working life there are all sorts of new health and saftey issues that have been bought in by the government that we all have to deal with so moaning about it will not change it.

If nobody complained nothing would ever get changed. This law needs a bit of flexibility just as the Govt were able to be flexible with the G7 summit.

Oi Stargirl I drive a "Poxy Van" who do you think it is that delivers all your beer, crisps, wine and spirits that you sell with your massive team.

I think that the smoking ban is a good thing however the stupid *** Government need to see the big picture. They can’t force people outside to smoke and then penalize a business for making its customers go outside....! How bloody stupid. It’s like telling them to make smoking gardens for pubs, landlord buys some heaters to keep his punters warm, guess what.....! Government charge them a green fee how bloody stupid. Biggsy was correct it stinks of double standards, Again.
